The open canopies may increase the take-off roll of the ND Nat Guard F-4. But maybe it doesn’t matter because of the extra thrust they get from the cold North Dakota inlet air. Dick Brownfield, a Canadian F-104 pilot, reported that in northern Canada his squadron SOP was to raise the gear handle at 100 kts on take-off roll to avoid overspeeding the gear. Amazing that the Canadian pilots never thought of just leaving the canopy open.

great to have an MIT perspective on what makes airplanes fly-it’s really all about smoke and mirrors!!!
