About Us
For all my life I loved to watch the sun, the source of life on our planet. I woke up to sunrises in Phan Rang, South Vietnam during the war when I flew dawn patrol as a Forward Air Controller. I watched solar eclipses from Manhattan as well as Manhattanhenge. And then for over a decade when visiting the Amalfi Coast watched sunsets over the Bay of Salerno from Ravello, Positano, and Capri. But best of all are the sunsets viewed from the West Coast of Florida especially from Sarasota (SRQ is the Sarasota airport identifier) where I now live. Each evening my neighbors and I go to our condo deck which over looks the pool, our beach and Sarasota Bay with adult beverages and watch the sun set always looking for the “Green Flash”. It should be noted that for 30 years I have watched the sunrises and sunsets over the Great Peconic Bay where they still amaze me.
This poem expresses the joy of watching the sun set.
The Sunset
By Andrea Maffei
I love the hour when day is dying,
when the sun, already weary, begins to set.
And I see its last rays languish
over the waves of the sea.
At that hour, my heart fills
with memories of a happier time,
in that sweet and yet sad hour,
I turn my sighs to you, dear lady.
With my mind and eye stilled,
I gaze at the shining ray
which comes from the serene west,
cutting through the stillness of the sea.
And I yearn to be on that golden path,
to join it on the road to the infinite,
to guide my weary life
to a haven of peace.
